Marietta Bajer

Marietta Bajer was born in Poland, Krakow in 1957. Her grandfather was an art historian and poet, who spent countless hours teaching young Marietta about European art. She sketched and colored her own renditions of old famous paintings that she studied in her grandfather’s books. She learned by studying art and practicing. Even though Marietta did not have formal art training, painting is effortless and show her love of life.
When Marietta was six-years-old, her father defected to the United States for a University of Oregon professorship in biology. Three years later, her family left everything behind and immigrated to Eugene, Oregon. Marietta spoke no English. It was a huge culture change and what kept her happy was painting.
Marietta’s parents, both biologists, steered her toward “being a doctor of some kind” as a profession. She graduated from Oregon Health Sciences School of Dentistry in 1984, went into the U.S. Navy for a few years, and then bought a dental practice in Forest Grove, Oregon. In 1995, she moved to Bend, Oregon and opened another dental practice. Her two daughters and the dental practice grew, and there was little time for painting
But a series of life events, culminating with the cancer death of her younger sister, a mathematician and textile artist, brought Marietta back to painting after a 10-year hiatus
Scratchboard art found Marietta when she was oil painting on a clayboard and decided to refine some detail by scratching into the clay. She was very excited and thought that she stumbled onto something amazing. She looked up scratchboard on line and since then, her passion grew. She has found her "IT" in the art world and continues to pursue excellence and personal growth in the relatively new field. She is an active Signature member of the International Society of Scratchboard Artists (ISSA), and a Signature member of the Society of Animal Artists (ISSA)
Marietta’s art is filled with a whimsical and bright side of nature. It shows the beauty and joy that can be seen when one's heart is open to the wonders and splendor of our world. Her animals have a bright expressive eyes which elicit emotion and feeling as seen by the viewer. It is truly remarkable.
